Liberty Fabric

Liberty Fabrics - English design par excellence since 1875

Soon after opening on London's Regent Street in 1875, Arthur Lasenby Liberty became famous for its silks. By the 1890s, Liberty Fabrics was synonymous with the very best in avant-garde textile design.

Today, every stage of fabric production is custom-made :

  • The motifs are drawn and hand-painted by the design team in London's Soho atelier.
  • The drawing boards are transformed into fabric at Liberty Fabrics' Italian printing plant near Lake Como.
  • Fabrics are created by technicians who oversee the production of over 300 different models each year.

Liberty Fabrics is famous as much for the quality of its prestigious Tana Lawn® fabric as for the artistic designs it creates. The permanent and seasonal collections highlight the richness of our cultural heritage.

The creation of Tana Lawn®

First sold in London in the 1920s, the buyer for Liberty, William Hayes Dorell, named the cotton Tana after its place of discovery and cultivation, the Lake Tana region of Egypt.

Back on home soil, the long cotton threads resembling silk yarns were spun into a shiny form and printed in Lancashire using copper rollers with brilliantly colored dyes.

A material was born with qualities that captured the imagination of generations to come. It was, of course, the famous Tana Lawn®.

Tana Lawn® a unique fabric imitating silk.

Tana Lawn® is a fabric developed by Liberty Fabrics in a cotton yarn so fine that its feel mimics that of silk. Tana Lawn® is fine, fresh and durable with a silky touch.

This fabric is a technological masterpiece. The quality of Tana Lawn® makes it possible to reproduce the extraordinary designs and patterns of the Liberty Fabrics workshop in London. Its bespoke weaving process has been refined by Liberty Fabrics experts over the last 100 years. Technicians have continually improved fabric performance and perfected print quality. They have thus increased the level of detail that can be achieved by printing a pattern on fabric.

Today, Tana Lawn® is constantly evolving as Liberty Fabrics refines its methods by integrating the possibilities offered by new technologies.

Liberty Fabrics continues to live up to its reputation for the best print available on cotton fabric.

A new artistic approach every season

Liberty Fabrics creates a new collection of prints every season.

Designers draw inspiration from literary works, music, paintings and artistic movements and ideas to create unique motifs.

Liberty Fabrics takes us on a journey through time, reinterpreting past eras with modernity and creativity.

Designers explore the great and small stories of our past through the materials, objects and works of art that people have left behind. They extract the essence, the extra soul, which they design with talent and originality.

Hand-drawn, painted in oil or gouache, pencilled in charcoal or watercolor, each print is an artistic work of art from an introspective approach to our cultural heritage.
